Operating the Odhner 239

This is a working 3D prototype, not yet a geometrically exact reconstruction. The existing mechanical calculation engine drives the moving parts.

Landscape: operate directly on the machine

Move any of the ten numbered setting selectors by sliding your finger along its slot. Swipe up on the main crank to add one turn, or swipe down to subtract one turn. Tap the large carriage buttons and other physical controls to operate them.

Camera locked: gestures operate the machine without moving the view. Camera unlocked: drag to rotate and pinch to zoom. All on-model arithmetic controls are disabled while unlocked. Lock again to operate from your chosen angle; FRONT resets only the camera.

Portrait

The 3D model remains at the top. Use the ten sliders and separate mechanical controls below. Switching orientation never resets the calculation.

Back-transfer

After calculating, tap Clear input, Engage transfer, then Clear result. The last action physically moves the setting levers to the transferred value. As a deliberate simulator extension, the carriage can change the transfer scale: column 2 divides by ten, column 3 by one hundred, and so on. The simulator warns about discarded digits.

Mechanical warning bell

The bell sounds when the accumulator wraps through zero into an underflow or overflow; during division, subtract until the bell rings and then make one positive correction. This first bell sound is synthesised rather than sampled from an original machine.

What remains for later builds

Exact external measurements, authentic control positions and lettering, geared-up carry animation, and internal pinwheel/carry mechanisms still need detailed reconstruction. Camera rotation and the model itself are genuinely 3D.
